Jacob, originally known as Israel after a significant encounter recounted in Genesis 32:29, was the son of Isaac and the grandson of the patriarch Abraham. He played a pivotal role in fathering 12 sons who went on to become the progenitors of the 12 Tribes of Israel.

**Genealogy**

Jacob, who later became known as Israel, held the distinction of being the second-born son of Isaac and Rebecca. He was the younger twin brother of Esau and the grandson of Abraham and Sarah. According to biblical accounts, he was chosen by God to assume the role of the patriarch for the Israelite nation.

As far as Jacob's family is concerned, he had two wives, namely Leah and Rachel, who were sisters, and two concubines, Bilhah and Zilpah. Through them, he was blessed with thirteen children. These twelve sons laid the foundation for the twelve tribes of Israel, and their birth order, from eldest to youngest, was as follows: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin.

Jacob was notable for showing favoritism among his children, especially towards Joseph and Benjamin, the offspring of his favored wife, Rachel. Consequently, the tribes were not treated equally from a divine perspective. Joseph, despite being the second-youngest among the sons, was granted a double portion of inheritance, as if he were the firstborn instead of Reuben. This unique status led to the division of his tribe into two separate tribes, named after his own sons, Ephraim and Manasseh.
